Off to Valencia: Our tips
Valencia is in a class of its own. Spain’s third-largest metropolis offers historical gems, culinary delicacies on every corner in the centre – and a surprising amount of greenery. Oh yes, the city is also pretty sun-kissed. Our tips!
World Capital of Design 2022
Artistic murals can find on the walls of the houses in the district of El Carmen, where numerous street artists have already realised themselves because Valencia is bursting with creativity and will also be the world capital of design 2022. Traditional ceramics, silk or goldsmith’s art are particularly typical souvenirs. And of course, the numerous museums in the city and the photogenic futuristic City of Arts and Sciences must also visit this year. A city trip this year is an authentic cultural experience.

It’s so green!
By 2025, Valencia aims to become the first carbon-neutral city. Pretty ambitious, but if you look around the city, you’ll see that it could work. A 12,000 square meter pedestrian zone was created around the central Plaza del Ayuntamiento, the 160-kilometre cycle path network is being further expanded, and more and more green spaces are being created. A classic among the parks is Jardin del Turia which runs along nine kilometres of palm trees, orange trees, pines, fragrant rose gardens, ponds, fountains and 18 bridges from different eras.

Another highlight awaits just ten kilometres from the city: the L’Albufera Natural Park. In the urban oasis, surrounded by rice fields and forest, vacationers relax with fantastic sunsets and romantic boat trips. When it comes to intelligent tourism, Valencia is at the forefront and has been chosen as the capital this year.
Albufera – the Garden of Eden
Sustainability is also vital for gastronomy. Luckily, Valencia has the privilege of being well stocked with local produce. Thousands of square meters of vegetable and fruit fields surround the city – up to the Albufera Natural Park, where several local rice varieties are grown. The fish comes freshly caught directly from the Mediterranean Sea and is transported to the Fishmarket in the Marina de Valencia auctioned.

Paella, paella!
Paella belongs to Valencia like white sausage to Bavaria – you have to try it when you are in the city. But beware: the real one is not available everywhere »paella Valenciana«. If you want to be on the safe side, you should visit one of these restaurants: Borja Azcutia, Goya Gallery or Palace Fesol. And if you’re going to learn how to prepare the perfect paella, visit the Valencia Club Cocina Cookery School. Good!

Between the market hall and star cuisine
A stopover in the market hall of gourmet paradise belongs on every tourist’s agenda in Valencia. If you only have little time, you are spoiled for choice when it comes to market halls: the lure Mercado Central right next to the old silk exchange La Lonja de la Seda, and the Mercado de Colon on Calle Jorge Juan. Both are not only an architectural feast for the eyes but also offer many goodies. Tip: Be sure to try the refreshing tiger nut milk »Horchata« with fartóns there.

In general, you could only spend your stay in Valencia with feasting: from creative award-winning cuisine to traditional rustic restaurants, you will always find new favourite dishes in the around 2,000 bars, cafés and restaurants.
Another quick sunbath
In Valencia, the sun sizzles from the sky 300 days a year, and even in winter, temperatures of 20 degrees are still possible. All the better that you can be in a sunny paradise from Germany in just two hours. City beaches are excellent spots for sunbathing La Malvarrosa or El Cabanyal. They are only a stone’s throw away from the centre – also ideal for spontaneously taking a photo of the sunrise or sunset at sea in the evening.
